IPL 2010 Auction may not be a lucrative one
The players may have to strike the deal for just IPL 2010 with much less money than the previous 2 seasons of Indian Premier League, unlike the previous play contracts of three years, this time the contract will be signed for just a year, which means the players bought through the auction will play just for season 3, scheduled in March. This is mainly due to the additional two teams that will be added for the IPL 2011.
With only two days left for the auction i.e 19 January 2010 is around all the IPL Teams are busy in finding the best players for their team composition, however, given the T20 format of the League, naturally teams will mostly prefer all rounders by the 8 IPL franchisee. In the previous 2 auctions, the prices bid for each cricketer were huge. This time, comparatively, these should be at much lower. There are 51 players to be bid for but with just Rs 4 crore allotted to each team and just one or two positions to be filled, only the top players who will gain importance.
Many cricket experts have an opinion that only 6 main players will be auctioned for bigger amount since the base price is around Rupees 1 crore , Kieron Pollard (West Indies), Shane Bond (New Zealand), Shahid Afridi (Pakistan), Darren Bravo (West Indies), Philip Hughes (Australia) and Imran Nazir (Pakistan).
Even players like Kemar Roach West Indian fast bowler and Sri Lankan bowler Chanaka Welegedara are also in the play for better price in buyer interest given their much improved performances in the recent past.
Pollard is expected to rake in the highest bid, of anything around Rs 2.5 crore, followed by Bravo at around Rs 2 crore. “Each team is looking for not just performers but also players who will create excitement around the team. Pollard will most certainly be the best buy at the highest price, not just for his talent but also for the buzz he is able to create. On the other hand, Bond may not be among the world’s top bowlers but he is recognised among the masses, but the only setback for Bond is injury not a major one though. Bond opted for IPL ahead of his national team for Test Cricket.
Shahid Afridi is another noteworthy performer when it comes to T20 format and a better option for the buyers.Very few people know the hard hitting Lou Vincent of New Zealand mind you he is one of the hard hitters in the circuit who can tear any bowling attack on his day.
